“In addition to a holistic approach to the text, Mahvash Sadat Alavi draws aid from the symbology of the Noble Qur’an to interpret the stories of Book II. She combines the holistic view of the text with the method of spiritual hermeneutics (ta’wil) and with the science of structure and symbolism.
She combines these approaches together in a manner that is unprecedented. The combining of these methods led to the discovery of meanings and messages and the orderliness of the meaning of the text of Book II that had been hitherto hidden. On the basis of her discoveries she presents the stories of Book II in twelve discourses and three blocks based on the classical Islamic three levels of certainty found in traditional Islamic sources and going back to the Noble Qur’an itself, namely, the knowledge of certainty al-yaqin), the eye of certainty (‘ayn al-yaqin) and the truth of certainty (haqq al-yaqin), and also on three kinds of friendship. Friendship with Satan, friendship with saints or friends of Allah (awliya’ Allah) and friendship with Allah Himself.
Alavi reveals that in addition to the relationship of the subjects of each story to each other, the twelve discourses also have an organic and systematic relation with each other. This finding, which is a major new discovery, reveals the existence of a hidden structure at the level of each story and also in Book II as a whole.”
